Afterword Privacy Policy

Afterword (“we,” “us”) helps you prepare an end-of-life vault of financial, estate, and personal information and deliver it to the people you choose. This information is among the most sensitive you own, and this policy explains plainly what we collect, how we use and protect it, and the choices and rights you have. This document is informational and is not legal advice.

1. Information we collect

• Account information: your email address and authentication credentials.
• Profile information: details you provide such as your name, state, relationship and family situation, and check-in preferences.
• Vault contents: the financial, estate, and personal information you enter into your vault sections, and any personal letter you write.
• Recipients: the names and email addresses of the people you designate to receive your vault.
• Activity and security logs: a record of key actions (such as deliveries and access to delivery links) and routine technical logs.

2. How we use your information

• To provide the service: store your vault, guide you through it, and deliver it to your recipients when you direct.
• To send you account, reminder, security, and delivery emails.
• To keep your account secure and detect or investigate misuse.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your vault contents for advertising.

3. How your information is protected

Your vault contents are encrypted (AES-256-GCM) before they are written to our database, using a key held separately from the database, so account numbers, policy numbers, document locations, and access instructions cannot be read from the database alone. Access is enforced at the database level so that one account can never read another's data, all traffic is served over HTTPS, and you can enable app-based two-factor authentication for an additional layer of security.

4. When and how information is shared

Your vault stays private to you until you choose to share it. We disclose information only:

• To your recipients, when you schedule a delivery or a trusted contact requests one and the cancellation window passes. We email you a security alert whenever your recipient list changes, and you can cancel a pending delivery.
• To service providers who operate the product on our behalf (see Section 5).
• If required by law, to comply with a valid legal process or to protect rights and safety.

5. Service providers

• Hosting and database: our cloud and database providers store your (encrypted) data.
• AI assistance (Anthropic): the in-app guidance assistant is powered by Anthropic's Claude. Only non-identifying context is sent to it, such as your relationship status, whether you have children, your state, and which vault sections need attention. Your name, date of birth, account numbers, and vault contents are never sent to the AI provider.
• Email (Resend): sends account, reminder, and delivery emails. Delivery emails contain your vault contents by design and are sent only to the recipients you specify.

6. Data retention

We keep your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your vault contents, recipients, and profile are deleted. Limited security and transactional logs may be retained for a reasonable period to meet legal and operational obligations.

7. Your rights and choices

• Access and export: you can view your vault at any time and export it as a PDF.
• Correction: you can edit any information in your vault or profile.
• Deletion: you can delete recipients, vault contents, or your entire account.
• Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA. Contact us to exercise them.

8. Children

Afterword is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the date above and, where appropriate, notify you.
